FS 595 Paint Conversion Guide — Vallejo, Tamiya & AK Interactive
Complete US military paint standard · 117 FS numbers · Vallejo Model Air & Model Color, Tamiya, AK Interactive 3G & Real Colors
The complete FS 595 colour reference for scale modellers — every Vallejo, Tamiya, and AK Interactive match in one guide.
FS 595 (Federal Standard 595) is the official US military colour standard covering every colour used on American military aircraft, vehicles, and equipment from WWII to the present. This guide covers all 117 modelling-relevant FS numbers with dedicated Vallejo Model Air and Model Color matches where they exist, community mix recipes for Tamiya XF and LP paints sourced from the IPMS Dayton reference, AK Interactive 3G dedicated or General Series matches for every entry, and AK Interactive Real Colors dedicated lacquer matches where they exist.
Vallejo entries show a Model Air or Model Color badge. AK General Series entries are marked General. Where no single Tamiya paint matches an FS number, a community mix box gives ratios by volume. LP36 (FS36320 Dark Ghost Grey) and LP37 (FS36375 Light Ghost Grey) are Tamiya’s only dedicated FS-matched lacquers.
For RLM Luftwaffe colours, see the RLM Colour Reference Guide.
How to read this guide
Dedicated match: dedicated = a single paint named or documented for that FS number — use straight from the bottle.
Community mix: Community mix boxes give ratios by volume from the IPMS Dayton reference. All ingredients linked.
Vallejo badges: Model Air = pre-thinned airbrush formula Model Color = brush painting formula. All entries URL-verified against Vallejo’s own product pages.
AK badge: General = AK 3G General Series. dedicated = paint named or documented for that exact FS number. close match = nearest available paint, not a dedicated FS match by name. Scale note: add 5–10% white at 1/48 and smaller.
Paint sheen: All paints in this guide are matt/flat unless otherwise stated in the product name. Exception: AK Interactive Real Colors are reported to dry with a slight satin sheen as their default finish — apply a flat varnish coat if a fully matt result is required.
