Description

TAMXF78 - Tamiya - Flat Wooden Deck Tan Acrylic - 10mL Bottle

Tamiya XF-78 Flat Wooden Deck Tan is a warm, light tan representing the natural unpainted wood deck colour of Imperial Japanese Navy and other WWII-era warships. Introduced as part of Tamiya's dedicated IJN warship colour family alongside XF-75, XF-77, and XF-80, it is specifically formulated for the unpainted hinoki cypress (Japanese cypress) or teak wooden deck planking visible on IJN carrier flight decks, capital ship weather decks, and destroyer forecastle areas in 1/350 and 1/700 scale. It is noticeably lighter, cleaner, and more yellow-tan in character than XF-55 Deck Tan — XF-55 being the darker, more olive-tan colour designated for Royal Navy and IJN teak and painted deck areas, while XF-78 represents freshly scrubbed or natural-finish lighter wooden deck planking. XF-78 is called out in Tamiya's 1/350 Yamato and IJN carrier kit instructions for the flight deck and weather deck wood areas, making it the primary natural wood deck reference colour for the full range of Tamiya and Fujimi IJN warship subjects.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • IJN Yamato and Musashi weather decks — the natural hinoki cypress wooden deck planking on the Yamato-class superbattleships' weather decks, secondary battery platform decks, and stern areas; XF-78 is the standard Tamiya call-out for wooden deck surfaces on the 1/350 Yamato kit (78030) and is appropriate for all Yamato-class subjects in 1/700 scale Waterline Series kits
  • IJN fleet carrier flight decks — natural wood deck planking on the flight decks of Shōkaku, Zuikaku, Hiryū, and Sōryū-class fleet carriers; IJN carrier flight decks used unpainted hinoki or fir planking that presented a lighter, more natural tan-yellow appearance than the darker Royal Navy teak decking; XF-78 represents this characteristic lighter IJN carrier deck colour distinct from the painted or darker-toned decks of other navies
  • IJN carrier Kaga and Akagi deck areas — the converted capital ship carriers with complex flight deck configurations; both operated the natural wood deck planking appropriate for XF-78 on their flight deck and hangar deck areas in 1/700 Waterline Series and 1/350 Tamiya kit work
  • IJN heavy cruiser and destroyer wooden deck areas — many IJN heavy cruisers and large destroyers carried natural wood planking on forecastle and stern deck areas; appropriate for Myōkō-class, Takao-class, and Shimakaze-class subjects where wooden deck planking is visible at 1/700 scale
  • USN and Royal Navy natural wood deck contrast — XF-78 is specifically the lighter, more yellow natural wood tone contrasted against XF-55 Deck Tan; on multi-navy diorama displays, using XF-78 for IJN wooden decks and XF-55 for Royal Navy teak decks produces the visually correct lighter IJN vs. darker RN deck appearance that distinguishes the two navies' vessels at a glance
  • AFV wooden stowage and deck fittings — as a general-purpose natural light wood tone, XF-78 is appropriate for unpainted wooden ammunition crates, fuel drums, tool handles, and natural wood deck planking on small landing craft, motor torpedo boats, and other small craft subjects across all scales where lighter, freshly cut natural wood is depicted
  • Diorama groundwork and natural materials — XF-78 as a warm sand-tan base for diorama groundwork representing dry grass, sand, natural wood-chip ground texture, and arid terrain surfaces; lighter and warmer than XF-57 Buff and provides a clean, unshadowed neutral base before washes and pigments are applied
