Description
TAMXF79 - Tamiya - Flat Linoleum Deck Brown Acrylic - 10mL Bottle
Tamiya XF-79 Flat Linoleum Deck Brown is described by Tamiya itself as depicting "the brown shade of linoleum, which was used mainly on Japanese cruisers and destroyers." It represents the warm reddish-brown synthetic rubber and linoleum deck covering applied to IJN cruiser and destroyer weather deck areas — distinct from both the lighter natural wood of XF-78 Wooden Deck Tan and the darker, more olive-brown linoleum of XF-64 Red Brown. IJN cruisers and destroyers used this brown linoleum covering on bridge decks, upper deck walkways, and secondary gun platform surfaces as a non-slip, practical deck surface. XF-79 is a warm, reddish-medium brown — described by users as a "very nice reddish-brown" — and sits distinctly between the lighter deck tan family and the darker hull red family of browns, making it specifically useful for the particular warm-brown linoleum areas visible at 1/700 and 1/350 scale on Tamiya and Fujimi IJN destroyer and cruiser warship kits.
Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.
- IJN heavy cruisers — the warm reddish-brown linoleum deck covering on IJN heavy cruiser weather decks and bridge areas; applicable to Myōkō-class (Myōkō, Nachi, Ashigara, Haguro), Takao-class (Takao, Atago, Maya, Chōkai), Tone-class (Tone, Chikuma), and Mogami-class (Mogami, Mikuma, Suzuya, Kumano) heavy cruisers across 1/700 and 1/350 Tamiya and Fujimi kit ranges; these vessels were among the most heavily modelled IJN surface combatants of the Pacific War
- IJN light cruisers — linoleum deck areas on Agano-class (Agano, Noshiro, Yahagi, Sakawa) and Ōyodo-class light cruisers; the Yahagi in particular is a frequently modelled subject as the escort cruiser sunk alongside Yamato in Operation Ten-Go (April 7, 1945), and XF-79 covers her deck linoleum areas at all scales
- IJN destroyers — deck linoleum covering on Fubuki-class, Ayanami-class, Akatsuki-class, Shiratsuyu-class, Asashio-class, Kagerō-class, and Yūgumo-class destroyers; the IJN destroyer was the most numerous surface combatant type in the 1/700 Tamiya Waterline Series and XF-79 is the standard linoleum brown for all of these classes
- IJN destroyer tender and support vessels — linoleum deck areas on larger support ships, destroyer tenders, and repair vessels that used the same warm brown linoleum covering as the destroyers they served; applicable to Akashi-class and other IJN auxiliary vessel subjects
- Bridge and superstructure deck details — used specifically for the linoleum-covered bridge deck walking surfaces, chartroom floors, and enclosed deck areas on IJN warships across all ship types where this covering is visible at 1/350 scale; at this scale the distinction between brown linoleum and natural wood deck areas becomes significant for accuracy
- USAF desert sand formula component — XF-79 appears in the documented formula for USAF FS 30279 Desert Sand (9 parts XF-79 + 1 part XF-2 Flat White), producing the tan-sand tone appropriate for USAF desert scheme subjects; its warm reddish-brown character shifts toward a warm beige sand when heavily lightened
