Description

TAMXF72 - Tamiya - Flat JGSDF Brown Acrylic - 10mL Bottle

Tamiya XF-72 Flat Brown (JGSDF) is described by Tamiya itself as "perfect for recreating the shade of brown seen on Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) vehicles." It represents the standard warm olive-brown used as the disruptive camouflage patch colour on Japan Ground Self-Defense Force armoured vehicles and is paired with XF-73 JGSDF Dark Green to produce the complete two-colour JGSDF camouflage scheme. Tamiya calls out both XF-72 and XF-73 specifically in the painting instructions for the 1/35 Type 10 Tank (kit 35329), noting they are "used to paint not only the Type 10, but also the Type 90, Type 74 and Type 61 tanks" — making these the authoritative paint references for all JGSDF main battle tank subjects in scale. XF-72 is a warm, medium-dark brown with a slight olive undertone, noticeably darker and warmer than XF-52 Flat Earth and less reddish than XF-64 Red Brown.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • Type 10 Hitomaru MBT — the standard JGSDF two-colour scheme (XF-72 Brown + XF-73 Dark Green) on Japan's most modern main battle tank, first delivered to the JGSDF's 10th Tank Battalion at Camp Ritto, Shiga Prefecture in 2010; Tamiya calls out XF-72 directly in the 1/35 Type 10 Tank kit instructions (35329) as the authoritative brown component
  • Type 90 Kyū-maru MBT — JGSDF two-colour brown disruptive patches on Japan's main frontline battle tank deployed exclusively to Hokkaido with the Northern Army; Type 90 entered service with the 7th Armored Division at Camp Chitose in 1992 and has been the primary JGSDF MBT for North Hokkaido defence; Tamiya confirms XF-72 is used for Type 90 subjects
  • Type 74 Nana-yon MBT — brown camouflage patches on the JGSDF's long-serving second-generation MBT that remained in frontline service across Japan's Armored Divisions from 1975 through gradual replacement by Type 90 and Type 10; operated by 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 13th Armored Battalions across Honshu and Kyushu prefectures; Tamiya confirms XF-72 for Type 74 subjects
  • Type 61 MBT (retrospective modelling) — the JGSDF's first indigenous main battle tank, replaced by the Type 74 from the late 1970s; XF-72 provides the brown component for Type 61 subjects in the standard JGSDF two-colour scheme for retrospective Cold War period diorama and display work
  • JGSDF support and combat vehicles — the JGSDF two-colour brown/green scheme extends beyond MBTs to self-propelled artillery, engineer vehicles, and armoured personnel carriers; XF-72 is the correct brown for Type 75 MLRS, Type 87 Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG), Type 89 IFV, Mitsubishi Type 96 APC, and Komatsu LAV subjects operating under JGSDF two-colour camouflage
  • JGSDF camouflage pair — always used alongside XF-73 JGSDF Dark Green to produce the complete standard JGSDF vehicle colour scheme; the two paints are specifically produced as a matched pair for the Tamiya JGSDF kit range and should be purchased together for any JGSDF armour project
