Description

TAMXF7 - Tamiya - Flat Red Acrylic - 10mL Bottle

Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red is a pure, vivid flat red — one of the primary colours in the Tamiya acrylic range, providing strong, clean red coverage with good opacity. It sits at a true red with no strong warm or cool bias, making it suitable both as a standalone marking and identification colour and as the primary red component in mixing formulas across military, aircraft, figure, and historical subjects. It appears in Tamiya's documented weathering formulas (Brake Dust mix: 4 parts XF-1 + 5 parts XF-7 + 1 part flat base), in RAF roundel red approaches (10 parts XF-7 + 1 part XF-9 Hull Red for BS381C:538 Post Office Red), and as a figure uniform colour for Soviet, Chinese, and decorative military dress subjects. Because it is a pure flat red rather than a gloss, it reads correctly for matte markings, painted insignia, and flat-finish figure work without requiring a flat overcoat.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • RAF roundel red — mixed 10:1 with XF-9 Hull Red to produce BS381C:538 Post Office Red, the standard red in RAF Type A and Type B roundels applied to Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, and the full range of RAF and Commonwealth aircraft from 1940 through to the end of WWII; this formula is called out in Tamiya's Spitfire Vb kit instructions and is the standard Tamiya community RAF roundel mix
  • Soviet Red Army and Red Star markings — straight XF-7 or lightly darkened with XF-1 for the flat red used in Soviet tactical marking stars on T-34, IS-2, and Red Army vehicle insignia; also appropriate for the red elements of Soviet Guards badge markings, divisional insignia, and vehicle number panels in red on 1/35 Eastern Front subjects
  • Japanese Hinomaru (Rising Sun) markings — the primary red for IJN and IJAAF Hinomaru national insignia on A6M Zero, Ki-43, B5N Kate, and the full range of Imperial Japanese aircraft subjects; for a darker, more accurate Hinomaru red, a small addition of XF-9 Hull Red or XF-64 Red Brown shifts XF-7 toward the slightly deeper, less orange-red seen on surviving period aircraft
  • German insignia and tactical markings — the flat red used for some German vehicle tactical marking numerals, divisional insignia, and unit markings visible on 1/35 German AFV subjects; also used for the red cross medical markings on German field ambulances and medical vehicles
  • RAF fuel tank fuel warning red — applied to the red fuel tank and danger markers visible in RAF aircraft fuel system areas and cockpit colour coding, called out in Tamiya's Mosquito FB.VI kit instructions (5 parts XF-7 + 5 parts XF-9 for fuel tank red)
  • Brake Dust weathering formula — primary component in Tamiya's documented Brake Dust mix (4 parts XF-1 Flat Black + 5 parts XF-7 Flat Red + 1 part flat base), used as a dry-brush weathering effect on AFV wheel and track brake drum areas simulating the rust-red iron oxide dust accumulation typical of operational vehicle braking surfaces
  • Figure uniform red — base coat for dress uniform jackets, ceremonial tunics, and parade dress of British Foot Guards, Canadian Ceremonial Guards, and other nations' parade dress figures in 1/35 and larger scale; also for Soviet pre-war and parade uniform elements and Chinese People's Liberation Army dress uniform red
  • General mixing red — used as the red increment in a wide range of mixing formulas for flesh tones, earth colours, and warm-tone adjustments; a small addition of XF-7 shifts any green or brown toward a warmer, more reddish tone and is particularly useful for warming down olive greens toward an olive-brown character
