Tamiya's hybrid acrylic formula — XF flat and X gloss

Tamiya's hybrid acrylic formula covers 73 XF flat colours and 32 X gloss colours, all in 10ml bottles. The hybrid formula can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and works with most airbrush setups. The XF flat series is the most widely used acrylic range for military, aircraft, and armour subjects — every major WWII and modern military colour is represented, organised by theatre and time frame. The X gloss series covers vivid, saturated colours for markings, automotive, and detail work.

Looking for colours organised by the specific vehicle or aircraft you're building? See the XF Acrylic vehicle guide for every colour matched to a specific kit, variant, and theatre.

Note for Canadian modellers: Tamiya X-20A acrylic thinner is currently unavailable due to Health Canada regulations. For thinning Tamiya acrylics, Tamiya Lacquer Thinner with Retarder, Mr Hobby Aqueous Thinner, or isopropyl alcohol is recommended.
Format 10ml bottle
Thinner Water · IPA · Lacquer thinner
XF flat colours 73
X gloss colours 32

Using Tamiya acrylics

Airbrushing — Thin 1:1 with lacquer thinner or IPA for best atomisation. A second brush coat may reactivate the first — allow full cure between coats when hand painting.

Hand painting — Thin lightly with water for smooth coverage. Work quickly as the formula dries fast. Shake or stir well before each session as pigment settles.

XF vs X series — XF colours are flat finish and intended for military and aircraft subject realism. X colours are gloss finish, more saturated, and suited to markings, automotive, and detail work. Both series are intermixable.

Hybrid acrylic · flat finish · 10 ml bottle

Hybrid acrylic formula that can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner. Best results with an airbrush; hand painting can be challenging as the second coat may reactivate the first. Widely used for military, aircraft, and armour subjects. Note: X-numbered products mixed within this section are additives and clear coats also in 10 ml bottles.

Colour swatches are approximate digital representations — actual colour will vary with surface, thinner ratio, lighting, and coat count.
