Description

TAMXF71 - Tamiya - Flat IJN Cockpit Green Acrylic - 10mL Bo ttle

Tamiya XF-71 Flat Cockpit Green (IJN) is a medium blue-green representing the factory-applied cockpit interior colour used by Nakajima on Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft throughout WWII. It is one of the most commonly misidentified colours in Japanese aircraft modelling: despite being labelled simply "Cockpit Green," XF-71 is specifically a Nakajima factory colour — not a universal Japanese cockpit colour and not correct for USN, RAF, or USAAF aircraft interiors. The colour has a distinctly blue-green character that sets it apart from the warmer, more yellow-green Mitsubishi cockpit colour, and the two should not be used interchangeably. XF-71 is called out in Tamiya kit instructions for Nakajima-built aircraft cockpits and is appropriate for N1K1/2 Shiden/Shiden-Kai, B6N Tenzan, C6N Saiun, and other Nakajima-produced aircraft interior surfaces. It is also noted as workable for the N1K2-J George regardless of which assembly guide is referenced.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • Nakajima N1K1 Kyofu (Rex) and N1K2-J Shiden-Kai (George) cockpit interior — the blue-green Nakajima factory interior applied to the floatplane Kyofu and the highly capable land-based Shiden-Kai interceptor serving with the 341st, 343rd (Kōkūtai), and 721st Kōkūtai in the Philippines (autumn 1944) and the defence of the Japanese Home Islands (1945); the N1K2-J is one of the most popular late-war IJNAF subjects and XF-71 is the primary cockpit call-out in multiple kit instruction sets
  • Nakajima B6N Tenzan (Jill) cockpit interior — the Nakajima-blue-green cockpit on the B6N torpedo bomber that replaced the B5N Kate; operated by carrier air groups (Kōkūtai) aboard Taihō, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku during the Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 1944) and from shore bases during the Leyte Gulf campaign (October 1944)
  • Nakajima C6N Saiun (Myrt) cockpit interior — the fast carrier reconnaissance aircraft whose exceptional speed allowed it to escape USN fighters; operated by the 252nd and 601st Kōkūtai over the Pacific, 1944–45; XF-71 is appropriate for all Nakajima-production C6N variants
  • Nakajima-built A6M Zero cockpit interior — Nakajima assembled a substantial portion of total A6M production alongside Mitsubishi; Nakajima-built A6M Zeros used a different, more blue-green cockpit colour from the warmer Mitsubishi version; for Nakajima-built Zero cockpits (identifiable by manufacturer records or when building to a specific aircraft identity) XF-71 is the correct interior call-out, while Mitsubishi-built Zeros require XF-49:1 + XF-58:1
  • Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Oscar) cockpit reference — while the Ki-43 is an IJAAF (not IJNAF) type, Nakajima used related interior colour practices across both their Navy and Army production; XF-71 provides a workable reference point for Ki-43 cockpit work pending more specific IJAAF interior formula research
  • IJN aircraft wheel bay and internal structural surfaces — the blue-green Nakajima factory colour was also applied to wheel bays, landing gear legs, and internal structural members on Nakajima-produced aircraft; XF-71 is therefore appropriate for open undercarriage bay details on N1K2-J and B6N subjects beyond the cockpit area itself
  • Modelling caution — XF-71 is NOT correct for US Navy aircraft (F6F Hellcat, TBF Avenger cockpits should use XF-20 Medium Grey), RAF aircraft (which use the XF-5/XF-21/XF-65 Interior Green mix), or USAAF aircraft (XF-62 or zinc chromate green mixes); the "Cockpit Green" label without national qualification has led to frequent misapplication across non-Japanese subjects
