Tamiya 1/35 - Armour - Full Build Feature

1/35 Armour

"This is what a German 2A7 would look like in an arid environment." Fictional but grounded in real-world arid camouflage patterns - inspired by vehicles deployed in Afghanistan. Kyle felt that painting it in standard NATO green would be the safe choice. The safe choice was less interesting.

There was a Leopard 2 demo vehicle wearing a similar arid scheme that gave Kyle the confidence to fully commit to this direction. The result is a plausible "what if" - not fantasy, just a road not taken.

The crew figure was painted by our good friend Ryosuke - Innerharbourworks on Instagram.

How Kyle Built It

Full step-by-step breakdown with WIP photography. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings unless noted.

PRIMER

Vallejo German Red Brown - Dark Without Being Black

Kyle wanted a dark primer that would read as a warm shadow tone in the recesses without the stark contrast of black. German Red Brown sits in that space - dark enough to anchor the shadows but warmer than black, which suits an arid desert scheme far better.

Vallejo Surface Primer German Red Brown (73605) - dark warm primer; shadow tone shows in recesses through the camo coats
STEP 1

Arid Camouflage Scheme - Three Colours

Kyle used discontinued AK Real Colors for this scheme. The three current in-stock alternatives from AK Interactive 3rd Gen are listed below, along with the Vallejo German ISAF Colors set which is purpose-built for exactly this type of modern arid German vehicle scheme and is the most convenient single-purchase option.

STEP 2

Overall Filter - Raw Umber with Make-Up Sponge

Abteilung Raw Umber thinned with AK Odourless Thinner and washed over the entire tank. Instead of leaving it to dry and wiping it all back with a brush, a make-up sponge was used to partially remove the wash - it takes some paint off and leaves some behind in a random, uneven pattern. The result is a subtle patina across the whole surface and a slight colour shift that also serves as a filter, unifying the three camo colours under a warm tone. The wash also pools in recesses naturally where the sponge cannot reach, doing double duty as a recess shade.

Once fully dry, a more targeted recess panel line wash was done with Abteilung Sepia thinned with the same odourless thinner - concentrating on specific panel lines for sharper definition.

Abteilung 502 Raw Umber (ABT007) - overall filter wash; partially removed with make-up sponge for patina effect
Abteilung 502 Sepia (ABT002) - targeted panel line recess wash once Raw Umber filter is dry
AK Interactive Odourless Enamel Thinner (AK050) - thins both Raw Umber and Sepia for wash application
TRACKS & WHEELS

Gunmetal Grey, Charcoal Pads, Red Grease Fittings, Earth Effect

Vallejo Gunmetal Grey as the main track colour. Track pads and wheel rubber rims in Heavy Charcoal. The red grease fittings found on the real vehicle in reference photographs are picked out in Mephiston Red - a small detail that adds genuine authenticity. AK Earth Effect applied over the whole track assembly. Charcoal is also used on anything on the tank that reads as black but is not actually painted black.

Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal Grey (77720) - main track colour; also tow cable and ice cleats base
Vallejo Heavy Charcoal (72155) - track pads, wheel rubber rims, and all near-black details throughout
Citadel Base Mephiston Red - grease fittings on road wheels; found in reference photographs of the real vehicle
AK Interactive Earth Effects (AK017) - applied over whole track assembly
TURRET MG

Iron Warriors with Nuln Oil

Citadel Base Iron Warriors - hatch turret MG3; washed with Nuln Oil
Citadel Nuln Oil - wash over MG3
LIGHTS

Silver Reflectors, Clear Red and Orange Lenses

Vallejo Game Color Silver (72052) - all light reflector housings
Tamiya X-27 Clear Red - red clear light lenses
Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange - orange clear light lenses
STOWAGE & CABLES

Patchy NATO Green Handles, Rusted Tow Cable, Ice Cleats

Stowage handles painted Tamiya NATO Green applied in a deliberately patchy manner - implying well-used, worn equipment rather than freshly painted kit. Tow cable in the same Gunmetal Grey as the tracks, with a light rust wash over the top. Ice cleats also Gunmetal Grey but with a heavy rust wash - stowed and not recently used, they rust more aggressively.

Tamiya XF-67 Flat NATO Green - stowage handles and hatch interior; applied patchily on handles to imply worn equipment
AK Interactive Rust Streaks (AK013) - heavy application over ice cleats
DECALS & ANTENNAS

Kit Decals, Mr. Mark Setter and Softer, K&S Music Wire

Mr. Hobby Mr. Mark Softer (MS231) - softens decals to surface detail
