Tamiya Paint Colour Chart — Complete Guide for Scale Modellers
Tamiya paint is one of the most trusted names in scale modelling — used by beginners and master builders alike around the world. This colour chart covers every Tamiya paint formula we carry at Wheels Wings & Hobbies, organized by series with reference notes on what each colour was designed for — including the military designations, time periods, and specific vehicle subjects each colour applies to.
Tamiya produces paint in three main formulas: hybrid acrylic (alcohol-based, fast drying, versatile thinner options), lacquer (fast-drying, highly durable, best for airbrushing), and enamel (oil-based, best for hand painting, washes, and weathering). Scroll down to find the right formula and colour for your project, or browse all Tamiya paints here.
Note for Canadian modellers: Tamiya aerosol spray cans (TS series) are not available for sale in Canada. Tamiya X-20A acrylic thinner is also currently unavailable due to Health Canada regulations. For thinning Tamiya acrylics, lacquer thinner such as Tamiya Lacquer thinner Retarder Type, or isopropyl alcohol is the recommended alternative — ask us in store for guidance.

Tamiya XF Flat Acrylics (XF Series)
Hybrid acrylic formula — can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner. Best results are achieved with an airbrush; hand painting can be challenging as the second coat may reactivate and lift the first. Widely used for military, aircraft, and armour subjects.
Colour swatches are approximate digital representations only — actual paint colour will vary depending on surface, thinner ratio, lighting conditions, and number of coats applied.

Which Tamiya Paint Formula Should You Use?
If you're new to Tamiya paints, here's a quick guide to choosing the right formula for your build:
- Hybrid Acrylics (XF/X series) — Can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner. Best results with an airbrush — hand painting can be tricky as the second coat may reactivate the first. Great all-round choice for military, armour, and aircraft subjects.
- Lacquers (LP series) — Best used with an airbrush. Hard, durable finish with fast dry times and excellent colour consistency. Requires lacquer thinner for cleanup and proper ventilation when spraying.
- Enamels (XF/X Enamel) — Best used for hand painting, panel line washes, and weathering over a fully sealed base coat. Slow dry time allows for blending and easy removal. Enamel thinner won't damage sealed acrylic or lacquer layers beneath.
A common workflow among scale modellers: lacquer or acrylic base coat → seal with clear gloss → enamel wash for panel lines and weathering → seal with flat or semi-gloss clear.
