To conserve aircraft battery power on the ground, the Luftwaffe used dedicated external power supply units to start engines and test avionics and armament before flight. The Kettenkraftrad (SdKfz 2) was a compact half-track motorcycle originally developed as an airborne towing vehicle, and its strong pulling performance made it a natural choice for towing these power units and other light trailers around airfields. Together, the pairing was a common sight at Luftwaffe forward operating bases throughout the war.
