The Gato class was the U.S. Navy’s main fleet submarine design of the Second World War. Seventy-seven were built between 1941 and 1943. Each was 95 m long, carried 24 torpedoes and had the range to patrol deep into Japanese waters from Pearl Harbor and Australia. Together with the closely related Balao class, Gato boats sank much of Japan’s merchant fleet, along with many warships, including carriers, battleships and cruisers. The box back lists some of their best-known kills. This vintage Sky Wave kit captures a typical Pacific scene and includes a Gato-class submarine, an Imperial Japanese Navy No. 13-class sub-chaser and a U.S. Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber, all in 1/700.
