The Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage” took its nickname from its spaceframe of around 200 thin steel tubes, which made it light, stiff and very quick through corners. Lloyd “Lucky” Casner’s American Camoradi team ran this #5 car in the 1960 Nürburgring 1000 km for Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney. A broken oil line cost them the lead in the middle of the race. Gurney drove a stunning recovery stint, and Moss brought the car home for one of the great sports car wins on the Nordschleife.
