The Maserati Tipo 61 first appeared in 1959 and earned the nickname “Birdcage” for its spaceframe, which was built from around 200 thin steel tubes welded together. That made it light, stiff and exceptionally fast. Powered by a 2.9 litre four-cylinder, it won at the Nürburgring 1000 km in 1960 and 1961 and became a favourite of American privateers. Carroll Shelby drove this #98 car in the 1960 Times/Mirror Grand Prix at Riverside, one of his final races before he retired from driving and turned to building the Cobra.
