The Douglas Skyraider was designed in 1944 as a carrier-based dive and torpedo bomber to replace the Dauntless and Avenger. It arrived too late for the Second World War, but its huge weapons load and long patrol time made it a key ground-attack aircraft in Korea. Even after production ended in 1957, no jet could fully replace it. The Skyraider went back into combat over Vietnam with the U.S. Navy, the USAF and the South Vietnamese Air Force, often escorting rescue helicopters. The A-1J was the final version. It was powered by an 18-cylinder Wright R-3350 radial, armed with four 20 mm cannon, and could carry up to 8,000 lb of ordnance. This vintage Airfix kit builds an A-1J of VA-145 “Swordsmen” with the full load of rockets, bombs and drop tanks shown on the box art.
