The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was designed as a carrier-based attack aircraft in 1944 and remained in frontline US Navy service for over two decades. Powered by a single Wright R-3350 radial, it could carry a greater bomb load than a wartime B-17 and proved remarkably versatile — serving in Korea and Vietnam in attack, electronic warfare, and airborne early warning roles. The USAF operated the A-1J variant extensively in Vietnam for close air support and RESCAP (rescue escort) missions, where its long loiter time and heavy ordnance load made it uniquely capable. France, the UK (Fleet Air Arm), and several other nations also operated the type. Airfix tooled this kit in 1968, representing the single-seat A-1J variant.
