The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3 was the Luftwaffe's standard single-seat fighter during the 1940 campaigns in France and the Low Countries and through the Battle of Britain. Willy Messerschmitt's design paired the smallest practical airframe with the most powerful available engine, in this case the Daimler-Benz DB 601, and introduced all-metal stressed skin construction, retractable landing gear and automatic leading edge slats. The E-3 carried two cowl-mounted MG 17 machine guns and two wing-mounted MG FF 20mm cannon.
