The Sd.Kfz.250 was the light end of the German halftrack family, a short Demag chassis that carried a half-squad or a specialist fit-out. The 250/9 was the reconnaissance variant, created when the wheeled Sd.Kfz.222 proved unable to cope with Russian mud and snow. The answer was to lift the 2cm turret straight off the armoured car and drop it onto the halftrack, giving reconnaissance battalions the same firepower with far better cross-country mobility. It served on the Eastern Front from 1942 and later in the west.
