The Ju 290 grew out of the Ju 90 airliner into one of the largest aircraft the Luftwaffe put into regular service. The A-5 was the definitive maritime patrol variant, with heavier defensive armament in powered dorsal turrets and beam positions, added crew armour and the endurance to shadow Allied convoys far out into the Atlantic for the U-boat arm. Fewer than seventy Ju 290s of all types were built, and the type also flew long range special transport missions late in the war.
