The P-51D Mustang was the definitive long-range escort fighter of the USAAF in Europe and the Pacific. Powered by the Packard-built Merlin V-1650, it combined high speed and exceptional range with the all-round visibility of its cut-down rear fuselage and bubble canopy. Six .50-calibre machine guns and provision for drop tanks or bombs made it equally effective as a fighter and ground-attack aircraft. P-51Ds escorted B-17 and B-24 formations to Berlin and back, fundamentally changing the strategic bombing campaign. Otaki first tooled this kit in 1974; the OT2-13-400 is the 1975 boxing, and the mould remained in production through subsequent Arii reissues.
