The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was the most-produced American fighter of World War II, with over 15,000 built. Powered by the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial, the "Jug" was renowned for its rugged construction and ability to absorb punishment. The razorback variant, with its tall fuselage spine and framed canopy, served with the USAAF from 1943, primarily in the European Theatre as a bomber escort before transitioning to ground attack duties. Otaki's 1/48 kit, first tooled in 1976, was well regarded for its engraved panel lines and detailed cockpit at a time when most manufacturers hadn't yet adopted either feature.
