The CJ-7 arrived in 1976 with ten inches more wheelbase than the CJ-5, which finally gave Jeep room for the Quadra-Trac full time four wheel drive system and an automatic transmission. It was also the first CJ offered with a moulded hardtop and steel doors, turning the utilitarian Willys formula into something people actually used as a daily vehicle. Production ran to 1986, when the Wrangler took over, and the CJ-7 remains the shape most people picture when they think of a classic Jeep.
