The Porsche 917 dominated endurance racing in 1970 and 1971, and the low-drag 917L “Langheck” (long tail) was built for the high speeds of the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, reaching close to 390 km/h. For the 1971 24 Hours, Vic Elford and Gérard Larrousse drove the #21 Martini Racing 917L. It wore Martini’s dark blue and silver livery and qualified on the front row before retiring from the race. A sister Martini-entered 917K of Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep won the race outright, setting a distance record that stood for nearly 40 years.
