The Audi R8 is one of the most successful prototypes in Le Mans history, winning the 24 Hours five times between 2000 and 2005. Its final victory came in 2005 with the #3 ADT Champion Racing car, run by Dave Maraj’s American Champion Racing team. Despite tighter restrictions on the ageing open-top prototype, Tom Kristensen, JJ Lehto and Marco Werner held off the newer competition to take the win. It was Kristensen’s seventh Le Mans victory, breaking Jacky Ickx’s long-standing record of six.
