Porsche introduced the 956 in 1982 for the new Group C rules. It was the company’s first car with an aluminium monocoque and used ground-effect aerodynamics, powered by a 2.65 litre twin-turbo flat-six. The 956 dominated Le Mans in 1983, filling nine of the top ten places. The winning #3 car of Al Holbert, Hurley Haywood and Vern Schuppan held on through a tense finish: with its engine overheating on the final laps, it crossed the line just ahead of the Ickx/Bell sister car.
