Peugeot built the 908 HDi FAP to take on Audi’s diesel prototypes at Le Mans. It was powered by a 5.5 litre twin-turbo V12 diesel, and its closed-cockpit design was unusual in the LMP1 class at the time. In 2008 the 908s were the fastest cars on the grid and took pole, but rain late in the race helped Audi hold on for the win. The #8 car of Pedro Lamy, Stéphane Sarrazin and Alexander Wurz finished fifth. Peugeot finally broke through the next year with a 1-2 finish at Le Mans in 2009.
