MATPK-2 - Matchbox 1/72 Spitfire Mk IX - WWHP113850
Preowned, Resealed, Mint inside, Box worn, decals useable but need work
The Spitfire Mk IX was designed as a stopgap. It paired a Mk Vc airframe with the two-stage supercharged Merlin 61 engine so the RAF could counter the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 until the Mk VIII was ready. It turned out to be one of the best Spitfires of the war. The Mk IX entered service with No. 64 Squadron in July 1942. Its top speed of 402 mph (645 km/h) and its armament of two 20 mm cannon and four machine guns put it back on equal terms with the Fw 190. More than 5,600 were built, making it the most widely used Spitfire variant, and it served with RAF, Commonwealth and Allied squadrons across Europe. This vintage Matchbox “2 Colour Kit”, made in England, builds a Mk IX of either No. 124 Squadron RAF or No. 306 “Torun” Polish Squadron.
