The Douglas Skyraider AEW.1 was the Royal Navy’s name for 50 refurbished ex-U.S. Navy AD-4W airborne early warning aircraft, supplied to Britain under the Mutual Defence Aid Programme. Each one carried a huge APS-20 search radar in a radome under the fuselage, letting the fleet see low-flying aircraft and ships far beyond the range of shipborne radar. The first four arrived in November 1951 and went to 778 Squadron at RNAS Culdrose. In July 1952 that unit was renumbered 849 Squadron, which split into flights that went to sea aboard HMS Ark Royal, Eagle, Victorious, Albion, Bulwark, Centaur and Glory. The Fairey Gannet AEW.3 replaced the Skyraider in the early 1960s. This limited-run Magna Models kit from England is a complete resin and white metal kit. It’s designed to build WV183, “419R”, of 849 Squadron D Flight aboard HMS Ark Royal in 1958.
