The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series started life as the DC-9 Super 80. It was a stretched, quieter and more fuel-efficient development of the DC-9, first flew in 1979, and early aircraft carried “Super 80” and “DC-9” titles before the MD-80 name was adopted. The MD-82 added more powerful Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217 engines for hot and high airports. Adria Airways was founded in 1961 at Ljubljana, in what was then Yugoslavia, and flew MD-82s in the 1980s with YU registrations and the Yugoslav flag on the tail. After Slovenian independence in 1991 it became Slovenia’s national airline, flying until it ceased operations in 2019.
