The MD-80 series was McDonnell Douglas's stretched and re-engined development of the DC-9, and American Airlines became its largest operator, running well over 300 of them from the mid-1980s through to the type's retirement in 2019. The shorter MD-87 traded fuselage length for range and a taller fin, and was ordered in far smaller numbers. Both wore the bare-metal and orange-red cheatline scheme that defined American's fleet for decades.
