The IAI Kfir was an Israeli development of the Mirage 5 airframe fitted with a General Electric J79 engine and canard foreplanes. In the mid-1980s the United States leased 25 Kfir C1 airframes and operated them as the F-21A Lion in the dissimilar air combat training role, flying with US Navy squadron VF-43 at Oceana and Marine squadron VMFT-401 to simulate MiG-21 style opponents.
