The Panavia Tornado began as the MRCA (Multi-Role Combat Aircraft), one of the most ambitious European defence projects of the Cold War. Germany, Britain and Italy formed the Panavia consortium in 1969 to replace their F-104 Starfighters with a single aircraft that could fly fast, low-level strike missions and also fight in the air. The first prototype, D-9592, flew from Manching in Germany on 14 August 1974. Its variable-geometry wings swept from 25 to 68 degrees, giving it short take-off performance and a top speed of over Mach 2. The name Tornado was adopted in 1975, and nearly 1,000 were built, serving into the 2020s. Italaerei, the original name of Italeri, released this kit in the late 1970s, while the aircraft was still in development.
