The Fitter line traces back to the Su-7, rebuilt around variable geometry outer wing panels to fix its brutal takeoff and landing performance. The Su-17M4 was the final and most capable version, with a proper nav-attack system and a laser rangefinder, and the Su-22M-4 was its export model, supplied to Warsaw Pact air forces from the mid 1980s. Poland held on to theirs longest of all, flying Su-22s well past the retirement of every other operator.
