The Messerschmitt Bf 109 K-4 was the last production version of the Luftwaffe’s famous fighter. It entered service in the autumn of 1944. Messerschmitt designed the K series to standardize the late-war 109 and end the mix of field modifications that had built up across the G series. The K-4 had a Daimler-Benz DB 605D engine with MW 50 water-methanol boost and could reach about 440 mph. It was armed with a 30 mm MK 108 cannon firing through the propeller hub. Other recognizable features include its tall tail, retractable tailwheel and cleaned-up cowling. Roughly 1,600 were built and fought in the final months of the war in Europe.
