The Yokosuka D4Y Suisei ("Comet") was a two-seat carrier-based dive bomber operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1942 to 1945. The D4Y2 Type 12 was powered by the Aichi Atsuta 32 engine — a licence-built Daimler-Benz DB 601 — and was among the fastest dive bombers of the war, though persistent engine reliability problems limited its operational effectiveness in the early carrier battles. The type served across the Pacific and was later adapted for reconnaissance, night fighter, and kamikaze roles.
