The D4Y2-S was a night fighter conversion of the Yokosuka D4Y2 Suisei dive bomber, adapted for nocturnal interception of Allied B-29 bombers attacking the Japanese home islands from late 1944. The rear observer's position was replaced with an obliquely-mounted upward-firing cannon in a Schräge Musik-style installation, and the aircraft retained the Aichi Atsuta inline engine of the standard D4Y2. The conversion was a field expediency measure reflecting Japan's desperate need for night air defence as bombing raids intensified.
