The Tiger I was Germany's most famous heavy tank of the Second World War. Its 88mm KwK 36 gun and thick frontal armour made it a formidable opponent on every front. Production changes continued right through to the final vehicles of 1944, which had all-steel road wheels, a simplified commander's cupola and a monocular gunner's sight. Late in 1944, Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 301, a radio-control (Funklenk) unit that operated Borgward demolition vehicles, received some of these final Tigers. It used them on the Western Front in the last months of the war.
