The Phantom FG.1, or F-4K, was built for the Royal Navy with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans and an extending nose leg for launches from British carriers. No. 892 Naval Air Squadron was the Fleet Air Arm's only front-line Phantom unit, flying from HMS Ark Royal from 1969 until 1978. In 1977 its Phantoms carried special markings for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. When Ark Royal was retired, the FG.1s went to the RAF and served with Nos. 43 and 111 Squadrons at Leuchars, defending Britain's northern airspace.
