The Type 94 tankette grew out of Japanese Army interest in the British Carden Loyd, conceived as a cheap tracked vehicle to carry supplies forward under fire and tow an armoured trailer. Designated a "light armoured car" rather than a tank, it was crewed by two men and armed with a single machine gun in a small rotating turret. In practice Type 94s ended up doing reconnaissance and infantry support work in China and Manchuria, where their thin armour was adequate against opponents without anti-tank guns.
