Tamiya's premium airbrushing formula — LP lacquer series
The Tamiya LP lacquer range is the premium choice for airbrushed scale models — 84 colours with a hard, durable finish, excellent colour consistency, and fast dry times. The LP series covers the same military and aircraft colour spectrum as the XF acrylic range and is fully colour-matched to it, making the two ranges interchangeable for most subjects. LP lacquers require lacquer thinner for thinning and cleanup, and adequate ventilation during use.
The LP range has particularly strong coverage for IJN ship grey (LP-12 through LP-15 covering all four arsenal greys), WWII German armour (Dunkelgelb three-tone system), and modern jet shades including dedicated Ghost Grey for F-22 and F-35 builds — colours that have no equivalent in any other lacquer range. Looking for colours organised by vehicle and theatre? See the LP Lacquer vehicle guide.
Using Tamiya lacquers
Thinning ratio — Thin approximately 1:1 to 1:1.5 with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner for airbrushing. The retarder version slows drying slightly for better atomisation in warm conditions.
Ventilation — Lacquer fumes are strong — always use in a well-ventilated space or spray booth. A respirator rated for organic vapours is recommended.
Over enamels — Do not apply lacquer directly over enamel as it will lift the layer below. The correct order is lacquer base coat first, then enamel wash over a gloss lacquer sealer.
Colour matching with XF acrylics — LP colours are matched to their XF acrylic counterparts. LP-1 Flat Black = XF-1, LP-2 White = XF-2, and so on. The two ranges can be used interchangeably across a build.
