Kyle's Ultramarine Captain in Terminator Armour Paint Guide
Kyle's Captain in Terminator Armour — Armageddon Pre-Order Launch
Warhammer 40,000 · Ultramarines · Paint Guide
To commemorate the pre-order launch of Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition Armageddon, we're showcasing one of the launch miniatures from the Leviathan 10th Edition box - the Ultramarine Captain in Terminator Armour. A model that rewards careful painting, from the crux terminatus on the shoulder to the Tyranid underfoot.
This specific configuration of the Captain comes in the Ultimate Starter Set. The standard standalone Captain in Terminator Armour is a great alternative - the same colour scheme applies directly, just without the Tyranid on the base.

How Kyle Painted It
Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels & Wings unless noted.
Black Base
Kantor Blue Base, French Army Grey-Blue Highlight
Kantor Blue as the deep Ultramarine base coat. AK French Army Grey-Blue used as the highlight - a slightly lighter, cooler tone that lifts the armour panels without shifting away from the Ultramarine family.
Essential armour colours.
Shoulder Trim, Aquila & All Gold Pieces
AK 3rd Gen Bronze on all gold pieces - shoulder trim, chest Aquila, and other decorative elements. Washed with Strong Tone, then highlighted back up with the bronze. The chest Aquila receives particularly heavy highlights to make it pop as the centrepiece of the front facing.
Essential metallics and washes
Shoulder crux terminatus and storm bolter
Crux Terminatus, Knee & Shoulder Parchment
Both the shoulder crux terminatus and knee use Deck Tan washed with Soft Tone, with an etch highlight technique for precise application on the raised detail. Washed over with Dark Tone to deepen the recesses. Purity seal parchment and shoulder parchment follow the same recipe: Khaki base, Soft Tone wash, Khaki highlight.
Red Casing, Metal Body
Gory Red for the bolter casing body plate, Plate Mail Metal for the metal portions, washed with Dark Tone throughout.
Dark Blade, Brass Hilt
Blade in Plate Mail Metal washed with Dark Tone for a darkened steel look. Hilt in Brassy Brass washed with Strong Tone, then layered back up to restore the shiny highlights where the wash was applied too heavily.
Deck Tan, Starship Filth Wash, Corax White Highlight
Deck Tan base coat, washed lightly with Abteilung Starship Filth oil colour for a warm, aged fabric look, then lightly highlighted with Corax White to bring the raised folds forward.
Two-Tone Flesh, Eyes, Mouth Detail
An easy two-tone flesh technique: AK11340 Desert Sand as the base, then Army Painter Crusader Skin Speedpaint applied as both the wash and mid tone in one step. Layer back up with Desert Sand for the final highlight. Eyes applied with a very fine brush or toothpick in Heavy Charcoal. Tongue is Warlord Purple, teeth Corax White, with Dark Tone washed over the entire mouth area to unify.
Face and cheek detail close-up.
Essential skin tone paints - the two-step flesh technique.
Mr. Mark Softer & Tilt Shield
Mr. Mark Softer used to conform decal film into surface detail. The tilt shields use a checkerboard decal with one half painted Gory Red for a two-tone look before the decal is applied over the top.
Tyranid, Stone & Green Growth
The base features a dead Tyranid underfoot, stone and sandy ground, and a green vine growth. AK Sandy Desert Paste on the empty areas, painted in Medium Sea Grey and washed with Mummified Grime, then a rough Deck Tan drybrush for the stone. The vine is Medium Olive. The Tyranid's flesh tone uses Bone White, washed with Mummified Grime and drybrushed back up - carapace in Hexed Lichen highlighted with Warlord Purple.
Base close-up - Tyranid, stone, and vine growth.
Essential base colours.
