Kyle's Custom Chapter: The Decimators

Warhammer 40,000 - Custom Chapter - Paint Guide

⚔ The Decimators

Kyle's homebrew chapter - a lost Blood Angels successor with their own identity, scheme, and lore. The inspiration was simple: wanting to paint red without painting Blood Angels. A slightly shifted scheme and a custom chapter badge change everything.

The Decimators chapter badge combines a standard white skull decal with a Roman numeral "X" painted in black over the skull's forehead. Simple to execute, immediately distinctive, and easy to replicate across an entire force.

Together these three marines form one Decimation Squad: one Assault Intercessor, one Heavy Intercessor, one Intercessor.

How Kyle Painted Them

Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings.

PRIMER

Mecha Grey - Neutral Base for Red

Grey primer chosen deliberately over black. Grey is the most neutral starting point and won't shift the hue of Evil Sunz Scarlet the way a black primer would - red over black tends to pull darker and requires more coats to achieve the right saturation. Grey keeps the red vibrant.

Vallejo Mecha Primer Grey (74641) - neutral grey primer; preserves vibrancy of red base coat
ARMOUR

Evil Sunz Scarlet Base, Orange Fire Highlight

Evil Sunz Scarlet applied over the whole model as the base coat. Highlighted with Vallejo Orange Fire - pushing the highlights toward orange rather than pink or white, which gives the armour warmth and prevents the red from looking washed out under bright light. Tamiya Black Panel Liner used on the panel lines for tighter, more controlled line work than a standard wash allows.

Citadel Layer Evil Sunz Scarlet - armour base coat over grey primer
Tamiya Panel Liner Black - panel lines on red armour; tighter control than a standard wash
SHOULDERS

Black Shoulder Pads, Khaki Trim

Black shoulder pads contrast sharply with the red armour. Khaki trim on the shoulder edges, with the chest symbol also in Khaki and washed with Agrax Earthshade for depth. Decals applied with Mark Fit Strong.

Vallejo Model Color Black (70950) - shoulder pads; also weapon casing
Vallejo Game Color Khaki (72061) - shoulder trim and chest symbol; skull and wings on weapon casing
Citadel Agrax Earthshade - wash over chest symbol and utility belt
Tamiya Mark Fit Strong (87135) - decal solution for skull decals and chapter markings
EYES

Imperial Blue with Gloss Finish

Imperial Blue with a small amount of Corax White mixed in for the eye lenses and weapon scopes. Vallejo Gloss Varnish applied over the lenses and scopes at the very end of the process - after the matt coat has been applied to the rest of the model - to give a wet, reflective finish that reads as genuinely lit.

Vallejo Game Color Imperial Blue (72020) - eye lenses and weapon scopes; mixed with a little Corax White; also purity seal wax
Citadel Base Corax White - mixed with Imperial Blue for eye and scope tint
Vallejo Gloss Varnish (70510) - applied to eye lenses and weapon scopes only, after the matt coat is dry
CHAINSWORD

Black Casing, Metal Teeth, Hazard Stripes

Black casing, Iron Warriors teeth, and Scrofulous Brown hazard stripes. The brown hazard stripes read as a more worn, campaign-hardened version of the classic black-and-yellow hazard pattern - fitting for a chapter with their own identity.

Citadel Base Iron Warriors - chainsword teeth; also weapon metallics, backpack exhausts and intakes, heavy intercessor power cables
Vallejo Game Color Scrofulous Brown (72038) - hazard stripes on chainsword
WEAPON METALLICS

Iron Warriors with Nuln Oil

Iron Warriors on all weapon metallics and backpack exhausts and intakes, washed with Nuln Oil. The same technique applies to the Heavy Intercessor's power cables.

Heavy Intercessor close-up - chest, shoulder and weapon detail

Heavy Intercessor - chest, shoulder trim, weapon and cable detail.

Citadel Nuln Oil - wash over Iron Warriors on all metallic areas
SOFT JOINTS

Heavy Charcoal

Vallejo Heavy Charcoal (72155) - all soft armour joints
UTILITY BELT

Earth with Agrax Wash

Vallejo Game Color Earth (72062) - utility belt and satchel; washed with Agrax Earthshade
BASE

Beach Sand and PVA

Real sand collected from the beach, secured with PVA glue. As simple as basing gets - and it looks the part.

VARNISH

Matt Coat First, Spot Gloss Last

Vallejo Matt Coat applied over the whole model to keep the bright red armour looking controlled rather than toy-like. Vallejo Gloss Varnish then applied selectively to the eye lenses and weapon scopes only - after the matt coat is fully dry. The gloss-on-matt contrast is what makes the lenses read as genuinely reflective.

Vallejo Matt Varnish (70520) - overall coat; keeps bright red armour looking controlled
