Kyle's Classic Ultramarine — A Blast from the Past

Warhammer 40,000 · Ultramarines · Paint Guide

⚔ Ultramarines

A blast from the past. Kyle's classic Ultramarine is painted in the style of the 1990s and early 2000s - that iconic blue, yellow, and red combination that greeted a generation of hobbyists walking into a Games Workshop for the first time. Just seeing this scheme brings it all back.

This is a push-fit Assault Intercessor from the Indomitus era starter set - deliberately painted in a much simpler way compared to Kyle's other Space Marine guides. No elaborate techniques, no eight-hour sessions. Just a clean, characterful classic scheme that any painter can follow.

One finishing note worth calling out: Kyle chose a satin varnish rather than matt. Satin gives the best of both worlds - a subtle sheen when the light catches it, without reading as fully gloss. The classic Citadel look, as it was meant to be seen.

How Kyle Painted It

A deliberately simple recipe. All products in stock at Wheels & Wings.

PRIMER

Black Base

Black primer throughout. The black edges left untouched through painting provide the natural shadow depth on the armour panels without any additional wash work.

ARMOUR

Electric Blue with White-Mix Highlights

Electric Blue from Vallejo Mecha Color airbrushed as the base coat. Highlights done by mixing the same Electric Blue with Corax White - a simple approach that keeps the highlight tone consistent with the base rather than introducing a separate colour. Tamiya Black Panel Liner applied to all blue portions to define the panel lines.

Vallejo Mecha Color Electric Blue (69020) - armour base coat; mixed with Corax White for highlights
Citadel Base Corax White - mixed with Electric Blue for highlights; also used for eye lens line
Tamiya Panel Liner Black - panel line wash on all blue and black portions
TRIM & AQUILA

Yriel Yellow with Reikland Fleshshade

Yriel Yellow on the armour trim and chest Aquila - the classic Ultramarine yellow accent. Reikland Fleshshade washed over to warm and deepen the tone, pushing the yellow into the recesses without dulling the colour on the raised surfaces.

Citadel Layer Yriel Yellow - armour trim and chest Aquila
Citadel Shade Reikland Fleshshade - wash over Yriel Yellow on trim and Aquila
WEAPONS

Red and Black

Gory Red and Abaddon Black for the weapons - keeping it clean and classic. Tamiya Black Panel Liner applied to the black portions same as the armour.

EYES

White Line, Red Ink Glow

Corax White line painted down the centre of the lens, then Red Ink glazed over to tint the whole eye red. The white line reads through the ink as a reflection - a simple two-step technique for a convincing glowing lens effect.

Citadel Base Corax White - line painted down the centre of each lens
Vallejo Game Color Red Ink (72086) - glazed over the lens; white line reads through as a reflection
BELT & LEATHER

Dark Fleshtone, Tan Highlight & Agrax Wash

Dark Fleshtone base on the belt and leather pieces, highlighted with Tan, then washed with Agrax Earthshade to deepen the recesses and unify the leather tone.

Vallejo Game Color Dark Fleshtone (72044) - belt and leather base coat
Vallejo Game Color Tan (72066) - highlight on belt and leather
Citadel Agrax Earthshade - wash over belt and leather
METALLICS

Chainmail & Nuln Oil

Chainmail Silver on the backpack and bolter metallic details, washed with Nuln Oil. The same reliable dark steel combination that appears across Kyle's Warhammer builds.

Vallejo Game Color Chainmail Silver (72053) - backpack and bolter metal details
Citadel Nuln Oil - wash over all metallic areas
DECALS

Tamiya Mark Fit Strong

Tamiya Mark Fit Strong used to conform the decal film into the surface detail - essential for getting the Ultramar chapter icon and any markings to sit flush without visible film edges.

Tamiya Mark Fit Strong (87135) - decal solution to conform film into surface detail
BASE

Desert Sand with Olive Green Grass Effect

AK Desert Sand applied lightly to the base, then painted over with Vallejo Medium Olive for a clumpy, patchy grass effect. Simple and effective - the warm sandy olive tone contrasts well against the cool Ultramarine blue.

AK Interactive Desert Sand - base texture, lightly applied
Vallejo Model Color Medium Olive (70850) - painted over sand for clumpy grass effect
VARNISH

Mecha Satin - The Best of Both Worlds

Vallejo Mecha Satin Varnish chosen deliberately over matt. Satin avoids the heavy, muted grim dark look while stopping well short of a gloss finish - a subtle sheen when the light catches it at the right angle, exactly as those classic 2000s Citadel paint jobs looked under a store's display lighting.

Vallejo Mecha Satin Varnish (69703) - final coat; subtle sheen without reading as gloss

The Finished Model

Ultramarines Assault Intercessor. Classic scheme. Honour the Chapter.
