Cyberhobby 9118 - 1/35 Armour - Full Build Feature

? 1/35 Armour

Cyberhobby kit 9118 - long discontinued, unfortunately. The Panzer III Ausf.K is a rare German command variant that kept the 5cm cannon while most other command versions substituted a dummy gun to blend in with the rest of the formation. The kit is built in the markings of the Panzer Grenadier Division Grossdeutschland, Eastern Front, Winter 1943.

The reference photos Kyle worked from showed an unusually clean tank - just a small amount of snow visible, otherwise very little weathering. That gave him the opportunity to paint a clean Panzer Grey vehicle rather than the standard heavily-weathered Eastern Front look. A deliberate choice that makes this build stand out from most armour builds in the genre.

How Kyle Built It

Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings unless noted.

MAIN SCHEME

Panzer Grey - Hull and Superstructure

Panzer Grey used on the hull, superstructure, and underside. Kyle used the Mr. Hobby Aqueous Panzer Grey, which is unfortunately no longer importable to Canada. The good news is that nearly every major paint line has a Panzer Grey equivalent - pick your preferred brand. The current in-stock Canadian alternatives are listed below.

TRACKS & WHEELS

Rubber Black Tyres, Grim Brown Tracks, Chainmail Wear

Rubber Black on the tyres. Grim Brown as the overall track colour. Track cleats and the teeth on the drive sprocket picked out with Vallejo Chainmail to imply metal wear - the parts that contact the ground and the drive system are the first to show bare metal.

AK11027 Rubber Black AK Interactive 3rd Gen - road wheel tyres
AK11112 Grim Brown AK Interactive 3rd Gen - overall track colour; also spare track rust base
Vallejo Game Color Chainmail Silver (72053) - track cleats and drive sprocket teeth to imply wear; also stowage metal highlights
SPARE TRACKS

Grim Brown Rusted with Rust Wash and Streaks

Spare tracks in Grim Brown, then rusted with AK Light Rust Wash and AK Rust Streaks - stowed tracks that aren't in active use rust more aggressively than the running gear, so the heavier rust treatment is historically appropriate.

AK Interactive Light Rust Enamel Wash (AK046) - spare tracks rust effect; also exhaust overall rust wash and stowage metals
AK Interactive Rust Streaks (AK013) - spare tracks rust streaking
EXHAUST

Chipping Technique - Dark Grey, Chip, Light Grey, Rust

A four-step chipping technique on the exhaust. Dark Grey base coat first, then AK Heavy Chipping Fluid applied over that. Medium Sea Grey painted on top of the chipping fluid. The Medium Sea Grey is then chipped away - either with a stiff brush and water, or a toothpick - exposing the darker base colour beneath and replicating the look of paint flaking off a heat-cycled exhaust. AK Light Rust Wash applied over the whole assembly to finish.

Step 1 - Dark Grey base

Step 2 - Chipping fluid over Dark Grey
AK Interactive Heavy Chipping Fluid (AK089)
Step 3 - Medium Sea Grey over chipping fluid, then chip
AK11014 Medium Sea Grey AK Interactive 3rd Gen - chip this layer to expose Dark Grey beneath
STOWAGE

English Uniform Wood, Iron Warriors Metals, Cavalry Brown Handles

All wood stowage in Vallejo English Uniform. Metal tools - shovel, axe head, wire cutter head - in Citadel Iron Warriors highlighted with Vallejo Silver, then washed with AK Light Rust Wash. Wire cutter handle in Cavalry Brown.

Citadel Base Iron Warriors - shovel, axe head and wire cutter head; highlighted with Chainmail, washed with Light Rust
Vallejo Game Color Silver (72052) - highlight on metal stowage tools
ANTENNAS

Scratch-Built from Albion Alloys Tube

The kit antenna parts were out of scale and replaced with Albion Alloys brass tube cut to length. The umbrella-style long-range command antenna - the feature that makes this command variant visually distinctive - was scratch built from multiple cut and trimmed tube pieces glued together with BSI Medium CA. An extremely tedious task; the single umbrella antenna took Kyle an hour alone. The result is accurate and worth the effort.

Albion Alloys Brass Tube - replacement antennas; see Albion Alloys range for sizing options
BSI Insta-Cure Medium Viscosity CA Glue - joins tube sections for the scratch-built umbrella antenna
DECALS
