Warhammer 40,000 - Dark Angels - Miniature Paint Guide

Dark Angels

When Azrael came out, Kyle thought the pose and miniature detail were too good to pass up. He painted him for the store - and of course to have more excuses to make jokes about the Fallen to every Dark Angels player who comes through the door. The Blade Slave was left out of this build.

How Kyle Painted Him

Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings.

Vallejo Model Color Medium Olive (70850) - edge highlights on armour
Vallejo Model Color Deck Tan (70986) - white trim panels; also banner wing
HELMET

Eye Glow, Red Wing Details

Eyes built up over a Corax White base, then Red Ink and Fluorescent Orange mixed together for the glow effect. Helmet wings in Black Red, highlighted up with Scarlet Red.

Citadel Base Corax White - eye glow base coat
Vallejo Game Color Red Ink (72086) - mixed with Fluorescent Orange for eye glow
Vallejo Game Color Fluorescent Orange (72156) - mixed with Red Ink for eye glow effect
Vallejo Model Color Black Red (70859) - helmet wings base; also red loin cloth base
Vallejo Game Color Scarlet Red (72012) - highlight on helmet wings and red loin cloth
GUN

Scarlet Red Casing, Iron Warriors Metal, Magic Blue Plasma Coil

Citadel Base Iron Warriors - gun metallic parts
Vallejo Game Color Magic Blue (72021) - plasma coil; also sword power node
SWORD

Plate Mail Metal, Dark Tone Wash, Magic Blue Power Node

Blade in Plate Mail Metal, washed with Dark Tone, then highlighted back up with Plate Mail Metal. Magic Blue on the power node.

Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Plate Mail Metal (WP3192) - sword blade base and post-wash highlight; also backpack vents
GOLD TRIM & ORNAMENTS

Greedy Gold with Soft Tone Wash

The same gold formula used on every gold element across the model - backpack trim, armour ornaments, banner details. Greedy Gold base, Soft Tone wash.

Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Greedy Gold (WP3188) - all gold trim and ornaments throughout
Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Soft Tone (WP3201) - wash over all gold; also robe and purity seals
RED LOIN CLOTH

Black Red Base, Scarlet Red Highlight

Same recipe as the helmet wings - Black Red base, Scarlet Red highlight. Products listed in the Helmet section above.

ROBE

Ancient Stone, Soft Tone Wash, Heavy Dry Brush

Ancient Stone base, Soft Tone wash, then a heavy dry brush of Ancient Stone to bring the colour back up on the raised cloth surfaces. When dry brushing: keep the brush on the raised areas of the cloak and avoid the recessed folds - the wash colour in the recesses should stay dark and untouched.

Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Ancient Stone (WP3088) - robe base and dry brush highlight; also belt and holster base coat
BACKPACK

Plate Mail Metal Vents, Armour Recipe Body, Gold Trim

Backpack body follows the same armour recipe. Vents in Plate Mail Metal. Gold trim uses the same Greedy Gold and Soft Tone formula as every other gold element on the model.

FLAG & BANNER

Brass Rod Pole, Charcoal Base, Deck Tan Wing, Scrofulous Brown Trim

The banner pole was replaced with a brass rod for extra sturdiness - the kit pole is prone to warping and the metal replacement is worth the effort. Banner base in Vallejo Charcoal, wing in Deck Tan. The figure with the cloak on the banner follows the same armour recipe as the main model. Scrofulous Brown for the trim.

Brass Rod - Metal Profiles - banner pole replacement for sturdiness; see range for sizing options
Vallejo Heavy Charcoal (72155) - banner base colour
PURITY SEALS

Vallejo Khaki, Soft Tone Wash, Hexed Lichen Wax

Vallejo Game Color Khaki (72061) - purity seal parchment; washed with Soft Tone
BELT & HOLSTERS

Dark Wood Speedpaint Diluted over Ancient Stone

Dark Wood Speedpaint diluted with Speedpaint Medium and applied over the Ancient Stone base coat. The dilution keeps the leather tone from going too dark over the lighter base.

Army Painter Speedpaint Dark Wood (WP2005) - diluted with Speedpaint Medium; applied over Ancient Stone base
Army Painter Speedpaint Medium (WP2000) - dilutes Dark Wood Speedpaint for belt and holsters
VARNISH

Mr. Hobby GX114 Smooth Flat

BASE

Real Rocks and Garden Dirt

Real rocks sourced from the garden, with dirt from outside affixed to the base with Army Painter PVA basing glue.

Army Painter Battlefield Basing Glue PVA (GL2013) - affixes rocks and earth to the base
