Bob Builds the Mandalorian N-1 Starfighter: Silver at Heritage Con 2026

Bandai 1/48 Star Wars N-1 Starfighter · Award winning build · May the 4th Be With You 2026

 Silver — Heritage Con 2026

To celebrate May the 4th, we are featuring this exceptional build from our friend Bob_Builds_Models: Bandai's 1/48 Mandalorian N-1 Starfighter, which took Silver in the Star Wars Ground & Flight category at Heritage Con 2026 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario.

The build showcases a masterclass in metallic weathering: layered sponge-applied metallics, masked and chipped markings using the hairspray technique, panel line washes, and a heat-treated engine exhaust effect using Vallejo True Metallic Metal.

How Bob Built It: Techniques and Paints

Bob shared his full paint and technique breakdown. All products used are stocked at Wheels & Wings.

PRIMER

Black Primer

Bob switched from Badger Stynylrez to Vallejo Mecha Black Primer for this build, citing easier airbrush cleaning with no loss in durability or adhesion. The black base gives the metallic layers above it natural shadow depth without needing to add black to the mix.

Vallejo Mecha Black Primer 200ml — airbrushed overall
HULL

Layered Metallic Finish

The N-1's signature polished hull is built up by sponging Light Steel and Dark Steel alternately across the airframe. Sponging rather than airbrushing creates natural tonal variation that reads as worn and reflective metal. Washes are applied selectively for streaking effects along the hull and wings.

Mecha Light Steel Vallejo Mecha Color — sponged on overall
Mecha Dark Steel Vallejo Mecha Color — sponged for variation and shadow
Model Wash Dark Brown (76514) Vallejo — applied for hull and wing streaking effects
Model Wash Black (76518) Vallejo — applied as needed for deeper streaks

ENGINES

Gun Metal and Heat Treatment

Engine parts are painted Gun Metal as a base. A light application of True Metallic Metal Sapphire Blue toward the exhaust areas creates a convincing heat treatment effect — the blue-purple tint that real metals develop from high-temperature oxidation. The Dark Brown wash adds a worn, heat-soaked appearance further back toward the exhaust nozzles.

Mecha Gun Metal Vallejo Mecha Color — engine base coat
True Metallic Metal Sapphire Blue (77111) Vallejo True Metallic Metal — lightly applied to exhaust area for heat effect
Model Wash Dark Brown (76514) Vallejo — rear exhaust area for worn heated look
MARKINGS

Masked, Painted and Chipped

Rather than using the kit's decals, Bob masked and painted all markings directly onto the hull using Tamiya masking tape. The yellow and red insignia were airbrushed with Vallejo Air paints. The chipping was achieved using the hairspray technique: a thin coat of Tamiya Chipping Fluid is applied under the marking colors, once dry then apply the marking colour over top of the dried chipping fluid layer. the marking paint is then scratched away with a stiff brush or water to reveal the steel beneath, simulating battle wear and age. A great way to get realistic chipping and is quite simple to execute.

Model Air RLM 04 Yellow Vallejo — yellow insignia, masked and airbrushed
Model Air Red Vallejo — red panel markings, masked and airbrushed
Tamiya Chipping Fluid Applied over markings before top colour — scratched away when dry to reveal worn steel
PANEL LINES

Wash Detail

Panel lines are picked out with a fine brush using Vallejo Model Washes. The black and dark brown washes are applied selectively, allowing each to flow into the recesses by capillary action. The cockpit interior is darkwashed with the black wash.

Model Wash Black (76518) Vallejo — panel lines, fine brush — also used for cockpit dark wash
Model Wash Dark Brown (76514) Vallejo — panel lines, fine brush
FIGURES

The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian pilot figure is painted in airbrushed chrome, keeping the Beskar armour reading as highly polished metal consistent with the character's appearance on screen. Grogu is painted with Citadel Warpstone Glow for his distinctive green skin.

Model Air Chrome Vallejo — Mandalorian figure, airbrushed Beskar armour
Warpstone Glow Citadel Layer — Grogu skin
GUNS + UNDERSIDE

Weapons and Underside Weathering

Mecha Gun Metal Vallejo Mecha Color — weapons
Model Wash Black (76518) + Dark Brown (76514) Vallejo — underside dirtying
