Minsk was the second vessel of the Soviet Kiev-class, a uniquely configured hybrid design that combined a conventional bow and starboard-side weapons suite with an angled flight deck for VTOL and helicopter operations. Commissioned in 1978 and assigned to the Soviet Pacific Fleet, Minsk operated Yak-38 Forger VTOL aircraft and a range of anti-submarine helicopters. The Kiev-class represented the Soviet Navy's first attempt at fixed-wing carrier aviation and was closely monitored by Western naval intelligence throughout the Cold War. Aoshima released this waterline kit in 1979, making it one of the earliest plastic model representations of the class.
