The KV-1 Ehkranami ("with screens") was a field and factory modification of the KV-1 heavy tank, adding appliqué armour screens bolted to the hull and turret to increase protection against German anti-tank guns encountered in 1941–42. The KV-1 had already shocked German tank crews at the start of Operation Barbarossa with armour largely impervious to standard anti-tank weapons of the time; the screened variant pushed that protection further, though at the cost of additional weight on an already mechanically stressed design. It served on the Eastern Front through 1942 before being phased out in favour of the KV-1S and later types.
