The Hotchkiss H35 was adopted in 1936 as a light cavalry tank, its cast armour hull and one-man APX-R turret making it cheap to build but cramped to fight from. The improved H38 brought a stronger 120hp engine and a raised rear deck, and the type equipped both the mechanised cavalry divisions and infantry tank battalions in 1940. Hundreds were captured intact after the fall of France and pressed into German service as the Panzerkampfwagen 35H and 38H 734(f), serving as far afield as the Balkans and the Eastern Front.
