The Mitsubishi J2M Raiden ("Thunderbolt") was designed by Jiro Horikoshi's team, who also created the Zero. Unlike the Zero, it was built as a land-based interceptor for the Imperial Japanese Navy, with speed and climb rate taking priority over range and agility. Its big Mitsubishi Kasei radial engine sat behind an extended, tapered cowling. The J2M3 had four 20mm cannon and a top speed of 577.8 km/h, and it defended the Japanese home islands against B-29 raids. The Allies code-named it "Jack".
