The Nakajima J1N1 Gekko (Moonlight) began life as a long-range escort fighter before being repurposed as an armed reconnaissance aircraft, but found its true role as a night fighter against American B-17 and B-24 bombers over the Solomon Islands from 1943. The J1N1-Sa was the definitive production variant, dispensing with the earlier downward-firing cannon in favour of three upward-angled 20mm cannon in the upper fuselage for the oblique Schrage Musik-style attack. Fitted with early air intercept radar on some airframes, the Gekko remained in service until the end of the war.

This is a rebox of Tamiya's original Gekko tooling, reissued in 2008.
